Ready for a ban

According to Cornell University assistant professor of communication Brooke Erin Duffy, US users of TikTok had been anticipating a ban “for quite some time.””The Senate decision injects a heightened level of uncertainty into the livelihoods of countless content creators, influencers, and small business owners,” she stated.

The app may be blocked in the nation if it is not sold in a timely manner. According to the US, this is being done out of concern that TikTok might be used to propagate misinformation or spy on Americans.

Like other apps, TikTok collects some types of data, but the US is worried that this information can end up in the hands of the Chinese government—a charge the business has consistently denied.

In other news, the company has decided to halt its TikTok Lite rewards program, which compensates users in France and Spain for using the app.

The feature is “toxic and addictive,” especially when used by minors, according to European Commissioner Thierry Breton, who vowed to block it unless something was done.

The European Union declared that it would keep looking into the feature.
