Theresa Aba Kufuor’s (née Mensah) biography

In June 1972, Theresa had her last child, a boy named Victor Kofi Owusu Afriyie Mensah.

Some of the wardens at Ussher Fort became her friends, and occasionally they would stop by for dinner and to pick up her husband’s laundry before their shift. She objected with the policy that prevented children from visiting the prison. She whispered to her kids that they were not allowed to visit their father when she drove them to Ussher Fort on Christmas Day.

She walked inside with the baby wrapped in her cloth and told the older ones to wait outside by the little metal gate with bars in the wall connecting the cells to the waiting room. Her perseverance paid off when Mr. Kufuor noticed the infant during that visit and waved to the other kids while escorting them to and from the

Mother Kufuor was stern but devoted. She instilled in her kids a strong work ethic, regular attendance at Mass, and unwavering faith in God. All the children went to school at Christ the King Church, and that was the center of their existence. In addition, they had memberships in the Boy Scouts or Girl Guides and the Catholic Youth Organization. Anyone found breaking a rule was dealt with by her, as she appeared to be aware of everything that went on in her home.

 

There was always laughing in the family since she had a gift for telling stories and had a way with words. She was able to whistle the names of all of her family members, including her spouse. She had a devoted set of friends and was outgoing and compassionate. Moreover, she was a mother to

 

After serving 15 months in prison, her husband was freed, and they started the process of starting over. She started working as the first matron of the recently founded Cocoa Clinic in the middle of 1973.

In 1979, the Third Republic came into being, and Theresa’s husband was welcomed back into Parliament as the deputy leader of the minority. With the kids participating in extracurricular activities and Theresa continuing to work full-time to support her husband, family life was hectic. But things got tough after Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings took over in a coup in 1981. The elder children were to be sent to London for safety, the couple decided.
