The university also stated that Sakyi had acknowledged sending anti-LGBTQ remarks to activists in their email in addition to the tweets. Additionally, he deleted the account that belonged to him.

Ampofo sent screenshots of his petition to the school and their confirmation of Sakyi’s risk of losing his scholarship in their response.

The organization said that his fellowship actually required fellows to support the rights of all minority groups, including the LGBTQ+ community, and that his actions had gone against their rules.

 

Our fellowship and funding are intended to increase access for underrepresented populations, such as the LGBTQIA+ community, applicants from the Global South, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities.

We underwent a rigorous selection and interview procedure before deciding to award Mr. Derrick Boadi Sakyi a fellowship and funding to support his PhD in biological science. His fellowship and funding were granted on the condition that he continues to be a strong champion for an inclusive and diverse school and workplace, the school continued.
