He held that position up until January 6, 2009, when the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which had won the general elections in 2008, took over as the new government.

Dr Akoto Osei was sworn in as the Minister of Monitoring and Evaluation in February 2017 after being nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and undergoing parliamentary vetting.

The ministry of Monitoring and Evaluation was recently established with the purpose of reviewing, monitoring, and planning summits and forums to review the work of the government’s own ministries.

He was one of the nineteen ministers Nana Addo named in May 2017 to make up his cabinet.

The names of the 19 ministers were submitted to the Ghanaian Parliament and made public by Prof. Mike Ocquaye, Speaker of the House.

Dr Akoto Osei participated in the president’s inner circle as a Cabinet minister and supported important national decision-making processes.

Dr Akoto Osei was employed by the Centre for Policy Analysis (CEPA) in Accra. He also served as a consultant to the World Bank (Korean Division) in 1987, an associate professor of economics at Howard Universities from 1984 to 1995, a special adviser for the MFEP from 2001 to 2003, a deputy minister for finance from 2003 to 2007, a minister of state from 2007 to 2008, an acting minister of finance from September 2008 to January 6, 2009, and a member of parliament (January 2005 to date – 4th term)

won the election

At the general elections held in Ghana in 2004, Osei was chosen to serve as a member of parliament for the first time for the Old Tafo constituency in the Ashanti Region.

Dr Akoto Osei was selected to represent the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

His electoral district was one of the 36 out of 39 parliamentary seats that the New Patriotic Party won in that election for the Ashanti Region.

Of of 230 parliamentary seats, the NPP secured a majority of 128 seats.

Of of the 44,000 total valid votes cast, he won with 34,957 of them.

This amounted to 79.4% of all valid ballots cast.

 

Salu Ibrahim of the National Democratic Congress, Andrews K. Asamoah-Akoto of the Convention People’s Party, and independent candidate Amediku Dominic D. Quarshie lost to him in the election.

Of the total valid votes cast, they won 7,116, 426, and 1,501 votes, respectively. They represented, respectively, 16.2%, 1%, and 3.4%

In 2008, he won the general elections on the ticket of the NPP for the same constituency.

His district was one of the 34 out of 39 parliamentary seats that the NPP won in the Ashanti Region during that election.

Out of 230 members in parliament, the New Patriotic Party secured a minority victory with 109 MPs.

Of of the 47,478 total valid votes cast, he won with 36,171 votes.

This amounted to 76.18% of all valid ballots cast.

Dr Akoto Osei won the election over Mohammed Rabui Umar of the Reformed Patriotic Democrats, Dominic Kwabena Anomah of the NDC, Swallah Ali of the PNC, and Issah Abdul Salam of the CPP.

Out of all legitimate votes cast, these received 427, 10,386, 375, and 119 votes, respectively.

This amounted to 37.59%, 5.43%, and 1.28% of the total votes cast, respectively.

He triumphed in the general elections for the same constituency once more in 2012.

Out of the 57,478 total cast valid votes, he won with 43,561 of them.

This amounted to 75.79% of all valid ballots cast.

Dr Akoto Osei won the election over Issah Abdul Salam of the CPP, Faruk Muhammed Tankoh of the PNC, and Memuna Kabore Abu-Bakr Siddique of the NDC.

They received 13,454, 149, and 314 votes out of the total number of legitimate votes cast, respectively.

 

This amounted to 23.41%, 0.26%, and 0.55% of the total votes cast, respectively.

He is a Catholic Christian. He is married and has three kids.
