The World Bank Group said that it has increased its response to food and nutrition security in response to the global food security issue.
“The bank is currently providing 45 billion dollars by combining 23 billion dollars from its current portfolio with 22 billion dollars in new lending.
“We already cover 90 countries in our portfolio for food and nutrition security.
“It encompasses both immediate fixes, like increasing social security, and long-term solutions, like increasing productivity and implementing climate-smart agriculture.”
The bank stated that 335 million people, or 44% of the world’s undernourished population, would benefit from its intervention. It stated that women, who were disproportionately more impacted by the crisis, made up about 53% of the recipients.
“As an illustration, consider the 766 million USD West Africa Food Systems Resilience Programme, which sought to strengthen food systems’ resilience and boost readiness against food insecurity in the region.
It said that plans were presently underway to allocate an extra 345 million dollars to Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
