Ippei Mizuhara, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ longtime translator for baseball star Shohei Ohtani, was let go due to charges of theft related to illicit gambling.
The interpreter for Shohei Ohtani was sacked due to stealing allegations.At least $4.5 million (£3.5 million) was reportedly sent from Ohtani’s bank account to a bookmaker, according to ESPN. Ohtani is not charged with any crimes.On Tuesday, Mr. Mizuhara discussed his gambling debts with the sports network.
Ohtani made his Dodgers regular-season debut at the time of the announcement.
The BBC was informed by the team’s senior director of communications that while they are still gathering information, they “can confirm that interpreter Ippei Mizuhara has been terminated.”.According to ESPN, bank records it examined revealed Ohtani’s name on two payments totaling $500,000—one made in September and the other in October—to a Mathew Bowyer-run bookmaking business.
The Los Angeles Times reports that although Mr. Bowyer was looked into by a prosecution team that was investigating an illegal sports betting scheme worth millions of dollars, he was not brought up on any charges.
In America, sports betting is permitted in 38 states; however, it is still prohibited in California.
