President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made history on Monday, December 23, 2024, by commissioning Ghana’s largest ship, the Ghana Navy Ship (GNS) Achimota, at the Sekondi Naval Base. This milestone marks a significant boost to the Ghana Navy’s maritime capabilities, enabling it to combat illegal activities, secure natural resources, and contribute to regional security.

Key Features of the GNS Achimota

– Single-screw pitch propeller diesel-powered vessel
– High endurance for deep-sea navigation
– 65.4 meters long, 9.4 meters wide, with a draft of 4.8 meters and a gross tonnage of 499 tons
– Built in September 1999 by Kurinoura Shipbuilding Company Limited in Yawatahama, Japan

President Akufo-Addo expressed pride in acquiring over 20 modern platforms, including the GNS Achimota, to enhance the Ghana Navy’s operational capabilities ¹. He commended the leadership for their vision and professionalism in transforming the Navy into one of the finest in the West African region.

The commissioning was marked by a Presidential Fleet Review, showcasing the Ghana Navy’s operational readiness and resilience. Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, the Chief of Naval Staff, and Dominic Nitiwul, the Minister of Defence, praised the President’s commitment to modernizing the Ghana Armed Forces.
