The 48-horsepower electric motor in the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and Trail Hunter, the two most extreme versions of the vehicle, is mounted between the same 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four and eight-speed automatic transmission as the non-hybrid Tacos.

Under the truck’s rear bench is a compact 1.87 kWh nickel-metal-hydride battery that powers that motor. Together, the engine and transmission are referred to by Toyota as the i-FORCE MAX, and it produces 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, which is 48 horsepower and 148 lb-ft higher than the 2.4-liter “i-FORCE” Tacoma’s combined output of 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque.
