Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested five individuals in connection with an alleged assault on fire officers, leading to one sustaining juries.
On Monday, March 11, 2024, the event happened when the officers were reacting to a fire outbreak at the Racecourse Market.
The suspects threw stones at the firefighters because they believed that they were taking too long to respond to the scene.
A portion of the Racecourse Market, home to food and ingredient vendors as well as Millers, was completely destroyed by the fire, which broke out on Monday at around one in the morning.
There was severe damage, affecting about 180 stores.
D.O. 3 Simon Ben Boadu, the fire commander at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Fire Station, ascribed the fire’s quick spread to the crew members’ attacks.
We have counted roughly 180 stores affected by the fire, which originated in one of the corn mills and spread to others due to their close proximity.
“An investigation is still in progress. We intend to investigate this further with the latter. The attack on firefighters must end because whatever happens to the detained suspects will serve as a warning to others,” he declared.
