This most recent legal maneuver comes after the same MP filed a prior writ before the Supreme Court. Citing procedural flaws, the MP attempted to prevent the Speaker of Parliament from screening and approving cabinet nominations in that particular case.

The Attorney General, however, refuted this claim, stating that the plaintiff’s action had no effect on Parliament’s ability to function.

The protracted court dispute demonstrates how divisive the anti-LGBT Bill is, which has spurred contentious discussions throughout Ghanaian society.

See below for the remedies that Dafeamekpor is requesting from the court:

I. A declaration that, in passing the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill on February 28, 2024, the Ghanaian Parliament duly complied with all the constitutional provisions outlined in Article 106 (1), (2), (3), (4), (5), and (6) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
