Chairman Wontumi's Resurfacing Video Sparks Controversy
Past Conflicts and Current Allegations
Wontumi recounts the alleged targeted attacks on his business during John Mahama’s previous tenure, claiming his company was collapsed and 500 excavators and 400 pickups were seized. He emphasises his ability to survive such ordeals, warning Mahama to be cautious. Akonta Mining has faced regulatory challenges over allegations of illegal mining, or “galamsey”, including operating without a valid licence in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.
Denials and Counter-Accusations
Wontumi denies the allegations, stating that Akonta Mining has been inactive since its licence was suspended in 2023. He claims the revocation of the licence is a politically motivated attack by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to undermine his candidacy for NPP National Chairman. Wontumi accuses Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah of fabricating evidence and vows to sue for defamation.
The controversy surrounding Wontumi and Akonta Mining highlights Ghana’s ongoing struggle against galamsey and the complex interplay between politics and business in the country. The outcome of the regulatory actions and the impact on Wontumi’s business and political career remain to be seen.
Throwback to when Chairman Wontumi, speaking on his television station, claimed that President John Mahama’s personal dislike for him could not determine his success in life.
