AG Under Fire: Name of MP Allegedly Paid to Bury 'Ghost Names' Scandal Demanded

Pressure is mounting on Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to reveal the identity of a Member of Parliament (MP) allegedly paid by the former Director-General of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Osei Assibey Antwi, to suppress the “Ghost Names” scandal.

Critics, including lawmakers and civil society leaders, argue that the Attorney General’s revelation has left the nation in suspense and that full disclosure is necessary for accountability and transparency. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Second Deputy Minority Whip and Weija-Gbawe MP, urged Dr. Ayine to name the MP in question, challenging him to provide evidence to support his claims.

Calls for Transparency

Other prominent figures have joined the chorus, demanding that the Attorney General reveal the MP’s identity. Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), emphasised the need for transparency to protect Parliament’s reputation. Nana Akomea, former Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), questioned the Attorney General’s approach, asking why he was withholding crucial information while selectively revealing other details².

Investigations and Allegations

Dr. Ayine alleged that NSS officials, including the CEO, made payments to a Ghanaian MP to influence the media and suppress investigations into the ghost names scandal ¹. He disclosed that eight suspects had been interrogated and were cooperating with the investigation, with evidence of payments made into the accounts of top NSS executives by private vendors of the scheme.
