Ursula Owusu, the Minister of Communications, led the Ghanaian government in announcing plans to license more satellite internet providers. This action is intended to address the continuous problem of damaged underwater cables impairing internet services.
Among these service providers, the multinational satellite internet behemoth Starlink is slated to make its Ghanaian market debut and guarantee a prompt resolution to the connectivity issue.
Minister Ursula Owusu underlined the gravity of the situation in a speech to Parliament on Monday, March 18, 2024, and disclosed that the broken underwater cables will require at least five weeks to restore.
The government is encouraging additional operators to set up shop in Ghana and has accelerated Starlink’s licensing procedure in response to the present internet interruption.
