The People’s National Convention (PNC) has formally endorsed John Mahama as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for the December elections.
At a news conference on Wednesday, November 27, National Chairman Samson Awingobit announced the declaration following discussions with the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and Functional Executive Committee (FEC) members.
“As a national chairman, we have invited NEC, which is our regional representative composed of the chairmen and regional secretaries, including members of the FEC (Functional Executive Committee), because the PNC, without a presidential candidate, cannot sit neutrally for that matter nine days before the general election.
“We discussed and, as a majority, we have declared that the PNC will throw our support behind the NDC presidential candidate for the 2024 elections,” he remarked at the conclusion of the discussion.
Mr. Awingobit clarified that the PNC’s preference for John Mahama and the NDC over other contenders for president is meant to guarantee collaboration between the PNC and the government that the NDC will establish in the future.
The PNC and 10 other parties were disqualified from the presidential race by the Electoral Commission (EC) for errors in their nomination papers.
The PNC has maintained its commitment to genuine political engagement despite the courts rejecting the party’s action against the EC.
